It is incredible... Incredible not in the sense of entertaining... incredible as in the sense of challenging. If you want to be live comfortably in the status quo than do not read this book. But if you, like increasingly many more people, are thirsty for something different than the status quo, thirsty for a Christianity that radically makes a difference in our world (neighborhood, country, nationally) than read this. But let us not just read it. Let us wrestle with it.
Studies show that in North America, their is no statistical difference between those that call themselves Christians and those who don't. We (many of us who claim to be followers of Christ) look exactly like our culture... how we talk... what we watch... where we live... what we value... what we spend our money on... etc... But Jesus was a radical. he was counter cultural... He came preaching the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom that flew in the face of worldly Kingdoms. If we are living as citizens of God's Kingdom then our economics, way of life, and values should be much different than the worldly kingdoms we physically live in.
Shane Claiborne (the author) has a wealth of experience all the way from working with Mother Teresa, to working with Bill Hybels at Willow Creek... and does not just offer critiques for the church, but alternatives, and he does so in a loving but challenging way. Because he lives what he believes, it is not as easy just to write off what he has to say.
Let's embrace such challenges and be willing to imagine what God's Kingdom should like for us and dream of how it could impact each person that sees it and encounters it. I believe that people are thirsty for it ... creation is groaning for it...
Give it a read...

Circle and 8th

So some of you may know about the band that I've been playing in for the last year and a half. We've kind of been in hibernation since before Christmas. We did some recording and then because of Lisa and I moving and having a baby etc... It's been a little slow on the band end of things. Anyways... I finally finished our CD and we're ready to come out of hibernation. Jon made a myspace page where you can preview some of the tunes: www.myspace.com/circleand8th We are hoping that having our music recorded will open more venues for us to play and share our music in. So if you'd like to book us for anything let us know!! Enjoy the music (i hope!?).

Joel and the Mirror

So Joel has learned about the mirror. Often when he's in the middle of one of his cryfests I go and hold him in front of the mirror, and he entertains himself. The mirrors get a lot of finger prints and foot prints on them but it's all good. On this particular day instead of holding him (which gets hard after a certain point... but my muscles are getting HUGE... but Lisa's are bigger), we put him in what is known as a Bumbo. So we just sit and watch himself entertain himself, by seeing himself. It's quite funny.

And this is just a cute picture that I really like.

FACEBOOK!?!?!?

Wow! Time flies... It's been a while since I've posted an entry... I hope not to have another lull like that for a while. But it's been a crazy couple of months. We are now moved into our new house, and are enjoying being close to work and friends.
But what I really want to talk about is FACEBOOK. The phenomenon that is sweeping the nation. How does something like this take off? I heard about it about a month ago, and within a month everyone and their dog is on facebook. It's the new fad. But after so much peer pressure I caved... I couldn't handle it. I joined. I know there'll be something newer and better soon enough, but for now I will enjoy connecting with people I didn't know still existed.
But I do find it quite fascinating how something becomes the "new thing". How we all bite into it, and get on it... and it multiplies. How does that happen? What is it that makes something so immediately successful and the masses just flock to it. We arrived Monday around Midnight. We were gone for 10 days... I missed home, and my family but it was an incredible trip. We built 7 houses for some families with some incredible stories. It was sad to watch the immediate change when crossing the border and going from San Diego to Tijuana. It's one city divided by a border... on one side "the land of opportunity" on the other is poverty... divided by a line... It is always powerful to give and share our blessings in order to bless others. It changes us. It changed our youth. Numerous youth decided to follow Jesus for the first time, and many others came back to Him with a determination to follow him more closely in Calgary. Mission changes us, and brings us together.
It is interesting how we separate "church" and "missions" in North America... how we come together for the sake of coming together... But I have become more convinced that the community that God designed us for is a result of mission. Community for the sake of community eventually becomes shallow and dies... But when we share a common mission, people come together in community. And what if half of the point of missions is about us? It seems God has wired us that way. Blessing others is crucial part of God transforming us.
I'm excited for the life change that happened on this trip. But now the real work begins. We are leaving on Friday morning. We will be going down with about 115 people (84 being Youth). We go to Tijiuana Mexico which is just South of San Diego, CA. We are going to build 7 houses while we are there. This is very exicitng, but obviously this means things have been crazy busy. And I'm not that excited to leave my family for 10 days... but that's part of it all I guess. I am so excited about what God is going to do in the lives of these Youth. I always find it fascinating how Missions and Community walk hand in hand. Community is a result of mission. I can't wait to see the walls that the kids have put up come down and then to see them let Jesus into their lives, and let eachother into their lives.

Here is a glimpse of the chaos in this picture... This was our last meeting before we left.

As I sit here and write about missions I have Derek Webb playing in the background. So I'll leave you some lyrics of his, continuing in the spirit of missions:

Rich Young Ruler

(vs. 1)poverty is so hard to seewhen it's only on your tv and twenty miles across town

where we're all living so good that we moved out of Jesus' neighborhood

where he's hungry and not feeling so good from going through our trash

he says, more than just your cash and coin i want your time, i want your voice

i want the things you just can't give me

(vs. 2)so what must we do

here in the west we want to follow you

we speak the language and we keep all the rules

even a few we made up

come on and follow me,but sell your house, sell your suv, sell your stocks, sell your security

and give it to the poor

what is this, hey what's the deal i don't sleep around and i don't steal

i want the things you just can't give me

(bridge)because what you do to the least of these

my brother's, you have done it to me

because i want the things you just can't give me

... The goal is to do this trip this coming summer. We have been biking quite a bit, but since the weathers been getting nicer we thought it was about time to get a little more serious and bike some longer stretches.

On Saturday Gord and I biked from Lisa's parents place to Cochrane. This was rather tough and put a lot of things in perspective. For those that don't know Cochrane has a Mother of a hill and this proved to be a good test for us.

Here are a few pics from Saturday... Gord and I... a view from the top of Cochrane hill... and I thought I'd just throw a pic of my bike in there as well. Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to the trip.

New Friends

Last week, we hung out with our good friends Paul and Jackie who also had a son recently... named Isaac.
